🎵 1pm Shape Note Singing
🎵 1pm Shape Note Singing
09/06/2026 (6 days ago)
1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Shape note singing is a system originally devised to teach sight-reading and singing in harmony to folks with no musical background. From its beginnings in colonial America, it now has an international following. Non-performance singing, in four parts, for the joy of the activity alone is a beautiful example of community-based art. No experience or talent is required. We sing for one another; everyone is welcome. Our afternoon of Shape-note singing would include a brief history and description of the music and then simply singing from The Sacred Harp, the tune book most commonly used for this. We will bring loaner books. Cost: $2/person FMI Contact: Maine Shape Note Singing Community Alan Cohen biopestman@gmail.com (202) 669-6363 or Stephen Chace perniciousanemia115@gmail.com (207) 610-2357

Sunday, September 20, 2026. 10-1:30p.
The Gatherings, 1208 Surry Rd., Surry, ME, 04684 https://www.surrygatherings.org
Have you always wanted to write an original song, but don’t know where to start? Or perhaps you have been writing songs for years and would like a different perspective. Wherever you are in your musical journey, join internationally lauded singer songwriter Caroline Cotter for an immersion in songwriting that offers fresh approaches to crafting a song that truly speaks to your ideas and emotions.
Caroline has performed more than 1,000 shows across 46 states and 19 countries. In 2025 she spent two months performing at the United States Pavillion during the World Expo in Osaka, Japan.
In June 2026 she released “A Quiet Song of Hope” and “The Answer” is scheduled to be released this fall. Her songs carry hope and try to approach “darker subjects from a place of light.“ https://www.carolinecotter.com
The workshop will include a brownbag lunch discussion with a panel of songwriters who'll share insights about recording, building audiences, getting your music on the radio, social media, touring and collaborating. Panel members include Amy Love and Andy Revkin.
"Amy Love is a heart-stopping singer-songwriter. With honest lyrics and a mesmerizing voice, she carries audiences to their most nostalgic memories.” https://www.amylovemusic.com/ .
Andy Revkin, best known for decades of environmental journalism, also writes and performs folk-Americana roots music, often blending themes of science, human nature, and environmental issues. https://bit.ly/revkinsmusic
